With Aalborg winning tonight qualification will come down to tomorrows games.

There’s the possibility of having a 3 way tie
We lose in regulations and Aalborg win in regulation would mean us, Aalborg and Gomel would finish on 6 points.

From the IIHF website
The tie-breaking system for two teams with the same number of points in a standing will be the game between the two teams, the winner of the game taking precedence.
Due to the fact that the three-point system does not allow a game to end in a tie, then the following tie breaking procedure is applicable when three or more teams are tied in points in a Championship standing.
Should three or more teams be tied on points, then a tie breaking formula will be applied as follows, creating a sub-group amongst the tied teams. This process will continue until only two or none of the teams remain tied. In the case of two remaining tied teams, the game between the two would then be the determining tie-breaker as the game could not end as a tie.
Step 1:
Taking into consideration the games between each of the tied teams, a sub-group is created applying the points awarded in the direct games amongst the tied teams from which the teams are then ranked accordingly.
Step 2:
Should three or more teams still remain tied in points then the better goal difference in the direct games amongst the tied teams will be decisive.
Step 3:
Should three or more teams still remain tied in points and goal difference then the highest number of goals scored by these teams in their direct games will be decisive
Step 4:
Should three or more teams still remain tied in points, goal difference and goals scored then the results between each of the three teams and the closest best-ranked team outside the sub-group will be applied. In this case the tied team with the best result (1. points, 2. goal difference, 3. more goals scored) against the closest best ranked-team will take precedence
Step 5:
Should the teams still remain tied, then the results between each of the three teams and the next highest best-ranked team outside the sub-group will be applied.
Step 6:
Should the teams still remain tied after these five steps have been exercised then Sport considerations will be applied, and the teams will be ranked by their positions coming into the Championship (i.e. seeding)

My understanding is Steelers need to lose by 3 clear goals against Gomel to not qualify if Aalborg then beat Olimp in 3 periods in the final game

If a 3 way tie on 6 points - mini league created by those 3 teams

All 3 teams would have 3 points against each other so goal difference applies.

Aalborg 5-2. 1-3. Net. 6-5. +1

Gomel. 2-5

Steelers. 3-1

If Steelers lose by 2
Gomel 4-5. -1
Steelers. 3-3. Level

If Steelers lose by 3
Gomel. 5-5. Level
Steelers 3-4. -1

Aalborg will qualify if they beat Olimp in 3 periods no matter score between Steelers & Gomel.

I stand to be corrected!!!

That seems like sound logic to me.

2 goal defeat and we qualify.

3 goal defeat combined with an Aalborg regulation win and we're out.

That gives our short bench a little bit to play with.

A point guarantees us progression.

Aalborg will easily beat Olimp Riga so no chance of them helping us.

But if we fail to gain any points then we have to lose in such a manner we still end up with better goal difference than Gomel.

Brust starts for me seeing as Rok played the last game.

Does anyone know if our injured players travelled? It would be great if a couple could play a few shifts to help out the short bench…..the games aren’t exactly very physical so I’m sure the odd shift wouldn’t hurt, depending on their injury of course.

It’s been great to see the Steelers fans in attendance, but an empty arena can’t be good to play in.

I’m sure it said on the Steelers website that Dowd and Vallerand took part in practice before the first game. I’m also sure I saw a picture of Eberle taking equipment into the arena so they should all be there.

Let’s hope they can have the odd shift today then. Help the team out.

Looks like the same line up as last night so none of them are involved.
