Thought I’d put a lighter side off-topic subject to discuss…..

My story stems from my Brother and I getting hooked on playing NHL on the old Sega Megadrive (other consoles were available) in the mid 90’s.
I’d only just started to drive and had my own car and remember driving into work one day and it was announced on Hallam FM that the Steelers looked like they were going to fold (1st or 2nd time around???) and were appealing for fans to go and watch them against Nottingham Panthers on a Wednesday night.

As we liked playing the NHL so much we thought that it would be good to see a game live before they fold, so on a whim I bought us 2 tickets for us to go and watch them. The game was shown on Sky Sports as well back then.

We’d never been to the arena before so parked in PC World (before ANPR) and even got proper wrapped up as we expected it to be freezing haha. We won the game and I was hooked ever since. Was probably 1997/98 season ish, so guess Priestley will have played, but I wouldn’t have known who he was then of course.

Whilst I’ve not seen the early 90’s, I have to say what privilege it was to see the 2000/2001 grand-slam side play. The greatest hockey I have ever seen in the UK.

What’s your story, how did you become a fan?

I suppose my story comes from playing the game at rec level after getting into watching Ice hockey in the 1980's on Grandstand that in turn got me and my best mate ice skating 3/4 times a week at Queens Road from about 12 and in the mid 80's from the age of about 16 started playing a bit We then started later on in later 80's watching Sheffield Sabres play on the same night our training/skate nights. We used to talk to Alan hague Lee Mills, Russ and so on and they were all the buzz about a new guy coming into the the new arena. I sort of bitted and bobbed about in their first year or so, my first game was against the Medway bears, only watching when I could afford it or blag tickets, from some of the players that used to still go to the silver blades etc.. I remember Tommy Plommer and Neil Abel playing in a highlights game on TV, a Scottish Darby or something  and someone saying they had signed for the Sheffield Steelers and I was so excited ,Money wasn't that easy to come by that season so I had to save up for a game a month, but when I started getting a decent wage in about 93 I become a season ticket holder and I haven't missed a season since.. Big Neil Able became my favourite player and I later became friends with him.. I haven't looked back since, Hockey is a major part of my life...

Great story

Good old Grandstand!

You having played the game even at rec level is an interesting story. Plus you saw the formation of the Steelers. So was around the hockey scene before they were.

Wonder how many people can say that who are Steeler fans today.

Which grand slam side would be your favourite then? Cranston’s or Dennis Vial’s?

Guess I might have put this topic in the wrong area? Was looking forward to a few more stories….

Our childminder who has been a Steeler fan from day 1 bought us a family ticket for a Panthers game as a Christmas present, (back in the day when the rivalry was so REAL). That was I think 1997, from then we were hooked. Now been season ticket holders for over 20 years and passed it on by introducing new people to it along the was.

I became a Steelers fan the last year that Blazer was behind the bench, so I missed out on some of the all time great players. There were two main reasons that I started watching, one was down to a guy I worked with who was always talking about how great the sport was and how much I’d enjoy the game. The second was all down to the singer Barry Manilow. We were on holiday in New York quite near MSG, we called in the box office to see what was on. We had two nights of our holiday left and the choice of events was either to go see Manilow, or a hockey game. Before my wife could choose, I’d flashed the plastic at the cashier, buying two tickets for a Rangers v Devils hockey game. No way was I going to sit through a bl***dy Manilow concert! Suffice to say I was hooked, I hadn’t a clue what was going on most of the time, but I fell in love with this crazy sport. Returning home, I was straight on the phone to buy tickets for the Steelers and have been going ever since. Hopefully I’ll get back to an NHL game one day, I think I would appreciate it a little more this time.😁
