Literally every coach tells you to do the opposite. If a guy is in the lane, you don't shoot, especially from the blue line as that could easily lead to a breakaway.
It's dead easy to shout shoot from the stands, but you don't have the puck carrier's view.
You keep possession trying to open something up - who/where depends on strategy/system being used. E.g on a 2-1-2 you're trying to open up the guy in the bumper position for a quick shot/deflection from the slot, if going umbrella you're trying to open up the one timer from either face off circle. Penalty killing is brutal when a team has good possession and moves the puck quickly, so the idea is to pull someone out enough to open up an option.
Shots are fine, but every shot means a potential retrieval. Thats why coaches encourage taking good shots especially on a PP

The voice of reason as opposed to those screaming ‘shoot, shoot’ when theres no shooting lanes open. We are guilty of not moving the puck around quickly and securely enough to pull plays out of position and open up those lanes.

Last year we hit quick passes through the middle of other teams box and took good shots from that - Balmas was almost automatic from top of the circles.
This year teams have done a good job stopping it, penalty killing generally much better. As you say, we've not moved the puck consistently enough in the zone and we've struggled for zone entries all year.
Penalty killing I don't quite get what's gone wrong. Can't see anything obviously wrong, just shots seem to have found net when previously they weren't. Luckily being the least penalised team, the overall effect isn't as big as it could be.
