Steelers confirm the signing of Czech centreman Josef Mikyska from Czech Extraliga side HC Vítkovice RIDERA.

https://www.eliteprospects.com/player/1 ... ef-mikyska

The 26 year old has iced 96 Czech Extraliga games for Bílí Tygři Liberec & HC Vítkovice.

He’s iced in the Czech Chance Liga 282 times with HC Benátky nad Jizerou & Motor České Budějovice.

He’s also iced DEL2 hockey and had an excellent year in the Slovakian Extraliga with HK Dukla Trenčin where he hit over a point per game.

Looks to be in the rambunctious rink rat mould to me, no bad thing to be fair, but guys with these stats from the slovakian and Czech league tend to be a little hit or miss, he may come in and tear the series apart and be one of those pain in ass players everybody hates playing against or he could come in and just take 4 weeks to get up to speed and by that time its to little to late, I love a could speedy rink rat so lets hope thats what we get.

I have to admit though I was rather more hoping for a 6'6" brick outhouse power forward with an attitude to match called Shirley with a point to prove to anyone who looked at him funny... :zip:

Signing a player straight out of the Czech Extraliga is a good add. It’s a higher level than the ICEHL & DEL

The top sides in the Slovakian Extraliga (Slovan, Zvolen, etc.) would be very tough tests for the “Big 4” EIHL sides. However the quality drops off towards the bottom, not too dissimilar to our division in that respect. His numbers were on a mid-table side too.

I think the fact we’re getting a match fit player who’s just finished a 5game series in the Czech playoffs is some add by Fox who clearly maintains strong contacts in the Czech Republic given the influx this last few years lol.

Mikyska has not been offered a new deal by HC Vítkovice, they’ve released almost the entire team.

I’d certainly take him on his showing in this series as a 1st/2nd line centre.

He reminds me a bit of a smaller Lemtyugov, but with more speed & work rate. He’s got great stick skill, skating ability & agility which allows him to keep the puck if there’s no options.

I think he’s made a very good impression so far. My only criticism is that he holds on to the puck a little too long for me.

I would be happy to see him in Orange for next season.

I am on record as saying the same thing, I would love to see Mikyska on a Steelers Line...

Every team needs a Mikyska, a coach once told me, if you try to force a playmaker to shoot more and he will lose confidence 5 times out of 10 and dither more on the puck then he ever did not shooting in the first place, some forwards are natural providers and have great vision and a great pass and this should not be coached out of them, they will get their fair share of goals but the actual excel in seeing the open man and the pass to put his line mate in on net...

He may hold on to it to long from time to time but thats why he isn't in the AHL or NHL, he has great stick skills and great hand to eye coordination, when you watch him closely he has the defender watching his eyes while he is passing the opposite way.. many a time he puts a defender on his arse or completely out the play with a little shoulder drop or jink, just before the pass and he can do this at speed too... and in many respects he is making Dowd, Kirk and Eberle look even better than they are, which takes some doing...

A completely underrated player by opposition fans, I would offer him a contract in a heartbeat... :geek:

He's a skilled player with a good pass, but I'd be interested to see his faceoff win percentage, because that would concern me.

He’s operating at 48.51% prior to tonight’s 2nd game.

Myers is our best with 61.69%, with the leagues best being Cangelosi at 63.65%.

I'd try and sign Cangelosi. On the puck I'd probably edge Mikyska, but Cangelosi is so good at faceoffs he'd be a valuable asset.

I would suggest the faceoffs made the difference last night.
