In block 117 I recorded 114db during the intro tonight. The high was during being shouted at rather than the music, which went up to 111db during the intro.
It was noticeable that the volume increased at the start of the intro, as it was a more comfortable 95ish before when Steeler Dan came onto the ice, so it is obviously a deliberate, and unnecessary, increase in volume.

I sent an email to the Utilita Arena after last week's games (24th and 25th Jan) regarding the unacceptable level of the PA system spoiling my and many others enjoyment.
I received an acknowledgment of my email but I have had no reply since.
It was so bad that I had to remove my hearing aids to enable me to get to the end of the game.
I have loved going to see the Steelers play for many a year but have never had to put up with noise levels that high.
I think someone is under the misapprehension that Volume = Atmosphere
well it doesn't ! That is created by the crowd enjoying and reacting to what is happening on the ice. Perhaps that is the problem?
I did not attend on Sunday because I cannot put up with volume any more.
I am a season ticket holder but I am seriously considering not returning to the Arena unless something is done about the ear splitting noise.
I would add that I attend motorcycle and car racing and have been to many rock concerts in my time but have never experienced anything like this.

I’ve been having a chat with our H&S Manager at work, who has said pretty much what the document outlines that I found earlier in this topic.

He basically said, as long as there are warnings for loud noise during the ‘performance’ on your ticket or signs within the venue, then as long as it’s not 140db or more, there’s not much can be done. He did suggest that free hearing protection should be available though.

I’ve not been to the arena for well over 12 months for the hockey, so I’m guessing the volume has been increased fairly recently, or we’d have seen posts regarding this subject for quite a while?

You could try emailing the Steelers as well as the arena, but I would suggest there would be a certain person stationed in the Whitehouse who will of course know better than us E:p

I feel I may be in the minority here but I haven't had any issues with the sound system being too loud. We sit in the lower corner at the whitehouse end (Block 107).

I've not seen too many, but I think there is a small sign up warning about noise levels and flashing lights (A4 piece of paper blu-tacked to the wall) near where the 50-50 kiosk is near entrance B - I guess they will say that's enough to cover themselves from any legal action.

I sit in block 117 the same as penny who commented above.
Perhaps it is a problem that only occurs in certain areas but taking into account the number of people complaining it would seem to be more widespread.
There is a simple solution, just turn down the volume by a small amount to previous acceptable levels and use the microphone correctly ie. you don't have to shout into it (both announcers are equally guilty of this) then everyone will be able to enjoy the game instead of being excluded.

Just because it can be a certain volume doesn't mean it should be.

I recorded a max of 110 in block 104 during warn up. There is no doubt that it was deliberately turned up. I’ve previously heard the excuse that the players like it that way. For warmup. Not sure if this is actually the case. Be sure however that the paying customers do not. It was just intolerable again tonight. It isn’t clever to be loud, its just stupid.

No issues whenever I've been and wherever I've sat.

There's probably a whole heap of reasoning that's gone in to getting sound levels as they are.

1 - trying to find the best overall sound, in such a big open building is tricky at the best of times. Turn it down too much and some parts cannot hear, which could be argued could pose a H&S risk.
2 - point 1 is made harder when adjusting for number of people. You can test all you want in an empty building but you have to adjust once you have people in
3 - guarantee players like it louder in warm up so they can speak freely without fans hearing
4 - mic levels needing to vary between announcements and hype/build up etc. again this is something that isn't as easy as some think and you do want a difference in volume.
