STEELERS WIN 5-3.

Much better all round performance!

Warburton again strong showing and he gets the game puck for his first pro win. 88.1% Saves for him.

Major negative was our shocking discipline which v a slicker PP or is having a worse night on PK could cause us issue.

Connolly scored 2 and cost us 2 for sure.. A great performance albeit a concern over disapline but that can be ironed out, and sometimes you need to ride the thin line with cons, but Simms is right to say, steelers have built a reputation and history on character players, to be fair to the team, Owen stood on his head tonight and we we in full attack mode, if it hadn't been for Owen it could have been another 7/8 goal night without doubt..

5 on 5 we were comfortably the better team, but our poor discipline is going to cost us.

Both Eberle and Connolly need to rein it in a little. It's one thing playing with an edge, but they're both playing dumb.

Although we scored 5, I don't think our forwards are playing with the same freedom and skill level they were showing a week or so ago.

I quite liked the look of Pakozdi, he made a few nice plays.

Blaze again on Thursday, let's see what that brings.

Regards

5 on 5, we took the game 4-0, fortunately the dumb penalties didn't cost us tonight. The fourth line did well and I'm very impressed with Josh Waller.

Don’t forget Eberle was penalised a few times as well tonight. The game was a bit niggly at times.

Conns gets the rough end of the stick often then is penalised for his reaction. It’s not an excuse but I can understand his frustration.

IMO we do get penalised for things other teams get away with at times. Of course it reflects badly on us in terms of discipline but should it?

Should Davey have been given a game for boarding when others haven’t for the same offence?

I am biased as a Steeler but my wife would tell you I often call our own penalties as well as the oppositions.

Anyway losing streak ended which was important. We were the better team tonight.

I am not at all concerned with any of the failings or success of this team at the moment, I said at the beginning of this series that I was not going to get into the if and buts and the minutiae of the team or the performances and just enjoy this series for what it is...

I just wish to be entertained for 5 weeks with steelers hockey and care little for the prize or lack of at the end.
So far I can honestly say I am enjoying watching the games without the any of the stress to win or need to either. It actually makes a pleasant change.

Don't get be wrong I wouldn't want a league structure with little or no jeopardy involved, it wouldn't be a competition then and soon turn boring real quick.
I will have plenty of time for that when we get back to the real battle in September... this to me is just the starter that gets my tastes buds flowing again, ready for the main course. I have to say, I am getting rather hungary... :yeah:

There can be a fine line between playing on the edge and playing dumb. The fine line was easily crossed on a few occasions by several players, a few repeatedly.
Conns knows the refs look unfavourably at him. What does the clever player do? Reel it in a bit, or give them the opportunity to penalise them?
My most hated thing with regards to reffing in hockey is them calling just the retaliatory penalties. Call the initial play too, or instead of!
Thought Pakosdki showed promise, Waller continues to impress (been one I've had my eye on for 2-3 years). Was flabbergasted when the commentator said would there be room in the team for Waller if became available! Yes please. Its a no brained.
Shulze was my man of match. Was very strong in all three zones. Curtis of course had another great game.
Improve our discipline and good things will happen.

I'm particularly liking our approach to this- we seem to be using it largely as audition for young Brits with potential (Churchfield, Warburton, Waller), looking at possible signings for next year (Beaudry and Sculze, maybe also Mikyska) and in Olsen's case possibly trying to sow some seeds for down the line. Maybe, in Kirk's case, also to remind that we're here if NA doesn't pan out.
